Upgradeable Hardware in Your Computer

Computers are often assembled with standard and even sub-standard parts in order to keep the price at a reasonable and competitive level. This results in a machine that adequately handles most user’s needs, but in order to have a truly customized PC there are some hardware components that you can easily upgrade.

Replacing or adding to the RAM will allow your computer to access and read data faster, therefore increasing the overall performance of your machine. A machine with 2 gigabytes or more of RAM is well on its way to being a high performance computer.

The hard disk drive is the central storage area of your computer and you want it to have a lot of storage capacity. Storage is calculated in terms of gigabytes, and the more you want the more it will cost. Try to have the largest storage capacity you can afford, as it will fill up. External hard drives are another hardware device that can add storage to your computer.

Most people are familiar with the CPU. The central processing unit is the brain of the computer and when choosing the best one for your needs examine the clock speed, bus speed, and cache memory. These are the factors that will determine how quickly your computer will run and how much data it can access.

The motherboard is a hardware device frequently overlooked. The motherboard is where the memory cards, video card, microprocessor, power supply and other integral components of the computer are stored. If your motherboard has no room for expansion then you’ll never be able to add extra RAM or hard disk space to your computer.

The inner hardware of a computer may seem daunting to many, but a simple understanding of what’s inside your computer can help you design a customized machine that has superior performance to those purchased off the shelf.
